Description

Indians at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893: Simon Pokagon and The Red Man's Rebuke

Representations of Native Americans at the Worlds Columbian Exposition of 1893 ranged from the savage Indians of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to those civilized' by attending the famed Carlyle Indian School. This lecture by Lisa Cushing Davis discusses the presence of Michigan Potawatomi tribal leader Simon Pokagon at the Exposition's Chicago Day celebration, and the difficulty of being Native in a decidedlynon-Native modern world.
