Rust Belt Cities Exhibit Opening

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

School of Communication | Loyola University Chicago

51 E. Pearson | Chicago, IL 60611

5:30 p.m - 7:00 p.m

About the Exhibit:

In late 2008, De Perlinghi was sent by Liberation, the French daily newspaper to do a story about foreclosures in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked mainly around Slavic Village, a blue-collar community where many immigrants from Eastern Europe had arrived to work in the mills and furnaces of the city. This journey eventually took him around the Great Lakes Cities from a past industrial age. From Buffalo, NY to Duluth, MN, from Toledo, OH to Flint, MI, he went looking for a recent past.

The people you will meet in this exhibit are the last survivors, the last believers. They live next or in front of these crumbling giants, most of them struggling to get jobs in the service industry. They are still attached to their roots trying to put their love and care in a run-down street. Life is a hardship as even getting food in a regular supermarket is an expedition. This exhibit explores neighborhoods in 17 rust belt cities affected by economic downturn.

About the Photographer:

Jerome De Perlinghi was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1961. He currently resides in North Carolina and works mainly in the United States for European and American newspapers and magazines. His photographs have been published in Liberation, Le Monde, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Telerama. He has published six books, including one about Shanghai. You can find his work in the collections of the Library of Congress, La Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, The Museum of Modern Art and le Musee de la Photographie of Charleroi in Belgium. He teaches photography at Loyola University Chicago.
